This is a French IV class, and their level of French is good enough that I could show them photos of pastry shops in France with bonhommes in the window and discuss the cultural relevance. All four of the students pictured in the photo went on the following year to take Advanced Placement French (5th year) with me, and I was using this activity for the cultural value, which I knew would be helpful for the AP Exam. If I had used the bonhommes in a lower level, I probably would have done so after learning cooking vocabulary in class. There are many ways the idea could be used in all levels of French! I think they would love it, provided that the language comprehension required of them was not too difficult for their level of French :). Wonderful idea to have them create their own characters, but I do think that would have been hard for my high school students to do. Maybe you can figure out a way that will work for you! This would be a fun hands on acitivity for students. The vocabulary and verbs are very important for daily life in French cultures. I'm just curious if you provide vocabulary sheets prior to the recipe for the students to learn? Or do you let them discover it as they go? How do you scaffold their learning prior to cooking in French? I'd love to do this activity with my class and appreciate any help :) Sara uhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02384095154515637770noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6947744757463315997.post-16019622327487572902017-07-10T13:35:17.656-07:002017-07-10T13:35:17.656-07:00Hello Chez,

I am a student teacher from Vancouver, British Columbia, and I will be completing my long practicum starting in September 2017. While you used this lesson for a high school French class, I think I would be able to successfully do something like this for my grade 7s. Of course, I would need to adapt the material to the grade 7 curriculum, but the students would love this lesson. I think the lesson is effective not only because of its engagement value, but also because students are required to listen, read, and speak in French. The format is exciting and it sounds like your class loved it.

I wonder if the Game Show idea could be extended to span multiple lessons, where each student creates their own cue card for the game to be played the following day. This would add another written component and allow students to think outside the box in creating their ‘character’.

Thank you for such a great blog post!

Carter
Carterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14270887116337817617noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6947744757463315997.post-92203528529498993082017-07-06T16:38:09.875-07:002017-07-06T16:38:09.875-07:00Shanelle, I was observed during this particular le...Shanelle, I was observed during this particular lesson this year for my formal observation for the year. One particular student, who is not at the top of the class & has struggled a little bit, said upon entering, "Is this for us?" When I said yes, he said (within earshot of the principal) "Whew, because I was about to be sooooo disappointed if that wasn't for us!" I felt like that was the highest compliment, and the extra work required to set up the crime scene was totally worth it for that reaction!! As a bonus, who wouldn't want their principal to hear a student say that before you even started your lesson?Renéehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07479082948643158835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6947744757463315997.post-86933668480644586382017-07-06T16:32:02.783-07:002017-07-06T16:32:02.783-07:00Merci beaucoup Shanelle! Sometimes I forget just how much they love it, and then one of them will do or say something to remind me of that, which is always an encouragment to me to keep on creating new lessons. I love how you’ve incorporated mannequins in your classroom and think it’s so fun that the students can practice their French by learning about Jacques and Suzette’s adventures, they must love that! I really appreciate all the thought you’ve put into creating this activity, as it promotes making inferences, collaborating with others, and thinking critically, all through a real life version of Clue. The questions you ask the students get them to apply their knowledge from a variety of units which is great vocabulary practice and gets them thinking about passé composé and the imparfait in a unique and engaging way. It’s easy to switch up the story line too with whatever props that are accessible and perhaps if a few teachers create their own “plots,” classes could swap stories with each other to get more practice describing past events.

I agree with you that if our students are excited to learn, their learning process can be so much more enjoyable and successful, and activities like this do exactly that. I will look into Dave Burgess’ book, it sounds like he has some great ideas.

Thanks for sharing this awesome lesson, I will definitely use this activity one day and look forward to reading more about Jacque and Suzette’s adventures!

Shanelle
Shanellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18036223671044410180noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6947744757463315997.post-34249267491149146412017-05-02T18:01:42.323-07:002017-05-02T18:01:42.323-07:00Oui, Elias, c'est ça. Le Petit Nicolas et Le Petit Prince sont très enseigné ici au troisième ou quatrième année au lycée, par exemple. At my school, we have written an academic integrity policy for the world language department which states very clearly what our expectations are (we do not allow students to use Google translate). Parents & students are required to sign the statement at the beginning of the year. I've had the same experience that you're describing here, so I make sure that students write their sentences in my presence, and I move around the room helping each group. Sometimes I suggest a simpler sentence. Teacher support is key, in my opinion. This has worked well for me, and has solved this problem. I hope that helps!Renéehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07479082948643158835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6947744757463315997.post-82704613556308412192017-04-25T09:19:48.473-07:002017-04-25T09:19:48.473-07:00Merci beaucoup, Carol! :)Merci beaucoup, Carol! :)Renéehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07479082948643158835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6947744757463315997.post-76185159489424429442017-04-25T09:19:01.016-07:002017-04-25T09:19:01.016-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Renéehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07479082948643158835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6947744757463315997.post-75636746520872730942017-04-15T08:08:26.020-07:002017-04-15T08:08:26.020-07:00I love the idea of using the pictures of other man...I love the idea of using the pictures of other mannequins!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
